This is a weird year. I feel pretty confident that Lee will win. Haneke? I don’t know. I think it Amour could catch on more than you think.

I wouldn’t give Stoppard the Oscar, but I might have nominated him. I liked the movie much more than you. :)

I'll be very surprised if Haneke and Lee win Oscars Sunday.

I second the "should win" for Helen Hunt, but strongly disagree on Tom Stoppard's pallid Anna Karenina script.

Nice post! It's funny that Bancroft's performance seems subtle compared to, say, Bette Davis that year. But I always remember that violent dinner table scene in The Miracle Worker where she's screaming and wrestling Patty Duke.

Excellent review!! I need to rewatch these films. Josh has the boxset so if you want to borrow Part III, let me know.

Agreed! I think the subject was overwhelming and he should have narrowed down to one period or aspect of his life and do it well.

I agree that Nolan's real aim is Cobb's grief/trying to rectify his wrongs. When it came time for the "big reveal" (avoiding spoilers here), I didn't realize at first that we were learning what Cobb did. I had assumed it was his idea all along. Maybe this was me implanting my own ideas into the text of the film--which demonstrates just how much Nolan's conceit sticks with you.

And I'm with you on Memento's plot structure. Mesmerizing.

You've got True Grit and Tree of Life which are my top two for the rest of the year. I’d add Soderbergh’s Haywire, but I don’t think that’s due until 2011.

The only two on your list that I’ve already seen are Get Low and The Concert. I loved Get Low and really liked The Concert though I can think of a bunch of reasons why the latter might not work for some folks.

(not sure if this comment already went through so I'm reposting)

I've never been a Gilmore Girls fan, but I love Six Feet Under, and Friday Night Lights is a new interest for me. SFU is one of those shows that really goes to some of the darker corners of life, commenting on mortality in a way that really had never been approached before.

I started watching Friday Night Lights about a week ago, and I'm already well into the first season. I was expecting something entirely different, but the documentary-esque style of the show surprised me. Great drama.
